Do you know the meaning of yours and does it fit you?
My sons are Seane and Brian.
Seane Collin-Irish for John:"God's gracious gift"
Brian Patrick-"The Strong, as it was a difficult pregnancy and he was strong to survive."
My name is Debra-"The bee, the one who seeks the sweet out of life."
Did you choose your child/children's names for a personal reason or spiritual reason?
I chose my son's name for both reasons actually. His name is Faruk and it means ''The one who separates the truth from lie'' in Arabic. I can only hope and do my best to raise him to live up to his name. The second reason I gave him that name is because that was the name of my uncle who was killed in a war back in '90s. Just a small way to honour his memory I guess.
Oh, by the way, my name is Azra and it's of Persian origin. It has 3 meanings: pious woman; uncarved pearl; one of virgin mind.
Aaaah, I'm lucky to carry such a name :)
edit: I really think it's important to give meaningful names to the kids. I'm not religious, I'm an Atheist as a matter of fact (as everybody here knows), but still - name is something that will stick with you for the rest of your life. It's much nicer if it carries a positive and thoughtful meaning.
Reply:I wanted to name my daughter Deborah, but my husband had dated a girl named Deb and had a friend named Deb, so it was out of the question.
I never realized what a chore it was to name a child until I had to do it. Everyone has an opinion and a suggestion.
I went through every name in the baby books and my husband vetoed them all. He didn't know what he wanted, but he knew he had not found it yet. We knew we needed a family name from his side to please his genealogist aunt and traditional mother. I knew I wanted something different and a tad romantic and my husband wanted a girls name that he could shorten into a boyish nickname. So, I made a random suggestion in the car one night for a name and it stuck. My daughter has never let anyone shorten her name, though. She turned out all sugar and spice and Dad has learned to love it. Her middle name was my husband's namesake's middle name. It suits her.
Reply:Our sons are named based on names we liked. Their meaning is cool and all but had nothing to do for why they were named that.
The middle names, well two out of the three, are family names but again...no spiritual attachment to them.
Reply:well I don't have any children but my name means "Who is Like God". And I actually plan on changing my name soon for many personal reasons. The name I am changing to didn't show any known meaning for it so...
Reply:I named my youngest child Naomi after my great-grandmother. I was very lucky to have known her and we had a special relationship. Not many people can say that about their great-grandmother. I actually knew her mother (my great great) as well. Neat huh?
Reply:my oldest ... Ainslii was actually named after the drummer in the band Journey ( we just put a female slant on the spelling )
as it turns out .... she is a drummer lol
my middle one Tonii .... was my ex's laziness
he decided on Tony for boy or girl
I wanted to call her Autumn
as it turns out ... both Ainslii and Tonii mean to return home
my baby Katana was named after the Japanese sword , the motorbike and a character from a game .... all of which means a lot to us
and my own name Angela ... like the angel
means messenger
Reply:Yes, I know the meaning of my name, and no it does not fit. Especially since my name refers to god, and I know that god does not exist.
Reply:I liked the names, and the meanings. My oldest is named after Kings, Angels, prophets, and his Grandfather. My youngest after prophets of God.
Reply:When I was 12 I named all my future children.
Aaron Christopher
Kyle Christian
Nathaniel Zachariah
Michael Nehemiah
Phillip Joseph
Roderick Sebastian for the boys.
Shannon Elizabeth
Shoshannah Eveleen
Shenandoah Ixchelle
Kyra Mikaela
Ceara Danielle
Katherine Colleen for the girls
Saints and Biblical names mostly.
Then I grew up and vowed myself to celibacy.
If anyone wants to use these names I wouldn't mind. I still think they're pretty darn good names!
Reply:Daughter #1: her name means "grace"
Daughter #2: her name means "annointed one"
Daughter #3: her name means "princess"
Son #1: "right hand of God" but he was named for his grandfather and great grandfather
Daughter #4: her name is Justice. and it means Justice.
It was great finding their names. I didn't know until they were born what their names were going to be. My husband named them all except for daughter #3. He was a total dick-head for two years.
I think names are very important when choosing. They are going to be with them all their lives. And we will be called by name when it is time to go.
(btw, I think the meaning of Debra is so cute. You're the bee's knees, honey!! XD)
Reply:They're sort of personal but have nice meanings as well:
Jennifer Catherine (Jennifer means fair and Catherine means pure). Jen(nifer) is someone who has helped me a lot and so has Catherine
Ellie-Anna Joy (Ellie means shining light, Anna means favoured grace). These were just names that I liked
Matthew Noah (Matthew means gift of the Lord and Noah means peaceful, long-lived and comforter) Matthew is the name of one of my best friends and I just like the name Noah
My name is Catherine Sarah. It means pure princess and I guess it can't fit because no-one can be pure and I'm not a princess
Reply:God wants you to be happy, so he doesn't mind if you name your children anything you like........personal or spiritual.
Reply:My Son's name is Stephen, The first Christian martyr. Hopefully that will never be the case, but that is who he was named for.
Reply:Our daughter's name came from my wife's and mine celtic roots. It seemed an appropriate thing to do.... especially since she has red hair.
My son's name was a personal choice, but combined with his middle name.... it has powerful spiritual significance
:)
Reply:My Son, Kenneth Francisco Joseph Lewis, is named after my father, Kenneth, and the man that influenced his mothers life, Francisco, positively (her real father didn't); and my shipmate Joe (20) that died. Great kid, (great love of life) he is watching over Kenny as we speak, (along with his assigned gaurdian angel of course).
So both religiously and Spiritualy is the reason for my sons name.
Peace.
Reply:My oldest is named Samuel, after the prophet, because like Hannah, I prayed fervently for a child. My youngest is Ian--Scottish for John--because his conception and birth were against all odds and he was definitely a gift from God (and my husband's family is Scottish).
Reply:My son's name means "ray of light" and was chosen for spiritual reasons.
He was born in a third world country and adopted shortly after birth. Knowing that we would adopt beyond our borders we trusted that our soul mate would shine his light from somewhere in the world and show us the way to him, hence our chosen name for him.
Reply:I chose my children's names from both personal and spiritual reasons.
my name means - of the noble sort -I'm hoping it fits.
Son 1 Omar = flourishing life -he is full of life!
Son 2 Ali = noble, sublime -fitting
Daughter 1 Mariah = bitter -doesn't fit -but she was named for my grandmother Maria who was named after the most noble woman in history -Mary mother of Jesus.
Daughter 2 Aisha = alive, or -she who lives -fitting after a very complicated pregnancy in which I had to stay in bed for 6 months.
Reply:Oh, what a lovely question! I was blessed with one child and he was so special because we thought we could never have any. When he arrived it was 20 to 8 on a beautiful October morning. He deigned to open one eye, take a brief look to check us out then promptly went to sleep. This was after a spectacularly quick entrance into the world but without any fuss or bother. I wanted to call him John in memory of the older brother I had never met. I also associate John with the apostle, the apostle of love. My husband had no such ideas. But when he held this wee scrap of humanity in his arms he named him John James. For some inexplicable reason, it fitted. Just so happens his paternal grandfather was a James and his maternal grandfather was a John. Happy coincidence.
Edit: Ecterbob, how could I have forgotten? A gift from God indeed.
Reply:I chose my children's names purely for the way they sounded.....don't have a clue what they mean.
Reply:yes, i named my son johnathan from a show about an angel who goes around helping people and his middle name from the bible(elias).
Reply:no.
