Why do people try to choose a name that "matches" the other children's names?

you know what i mean, someone will post on here....what name goes good with so and so, child 1 and child 2...

is it really that important?

Why do people try to choose a name that "matches" the other children's names?
I was wondering that. I don't completely understand how the names can 'match' each other unless they rhyme or start with the same letter. Sometimes they give examples of 'matching' names and those are just two regular names and I was always wondering how in hell they match.
Reply:It was important for us to pick names that were similar in style for our children. It just seems really odd to me when I hear a sibling set with a son named George and a daughter named Mackenzie because they are totally different styles. I don't think that names have to start with the same letter or rhyme to go well together. I think a sibling set of Anna and Rachel sounds good together because they are both biblical and classic sounding. Just like a sibling set of Mackenzie and Avery would sound good together because they are more trendy sounding.
Reply:I think so. Not in the sense that they have to match like crazy lol, like all beginning with the same letter or of the same theme or whatever, but it's nice to have sibling names that "go" with each other. Less for the cuteness and more for having all of the names "equal" or on the same level as each other, for fairness.

After all, how weird would it be to have one son named like John and the other Ptolemy? How much do you wanna bet Ptolemy feels like the unloved child in the family? lol.
Reply:well, siblings names need to flow together!

something trendy like Jaelyn doesnt go well with a classy name like Genevieve.

the French name Amelie doesnt go well with a Russian name like Natasha.

but Genevieve and Amelie go well together.

Jaelyn and Jasmine go well together as the are both trendy.

names just shouldnt be on the other ends of the spectrum, but when it comes down to it, i guess it doesnt really matter.
Reply:If you like two of the same kind of name, then if you have any others then you want them to coordinate so the next child doesn't stand out. Like WHOA?! -l0l-

I'm Morgan and my sister is Anna. If my mom had another baby it wouldn't have mattered if it's name was different because our names aren't similar. My husband has brothers Ryan, Justin, and he is Cameron. They all end in -n. If his parents had another kid and named it Anthony...he'd stick out. -l0l- Poor kid!

But my husband named our son Jackson and I have always loved the name Madison.... So that our third child won't stick out like a sore thumb we'll name our third Clayton or Peyton.... So he/she coordinated with his/her brother or sister.

I wouldn't really do the whole matchy/matchy name game if I wasn't born in Madison County, Illinois and planned on having my own Madison for the past few years... %26amp;%26amp; my husband wanted a JACK (it's all of his friends from college together...John, Andy, Cameron, Kevin) -son.

If you don't want your third to stick out, then yah, it is important I think. :) -l0l-
Reply:Cause we are dorks. LOL My kids names rhyme. I have Zachery, Ashlee and Hailey. When I had my daughter, I told my husband since we had a child with a "Z" name I wanted our daughter to have an "A" name, that way I would have kids from A to Z. I know dorky, but when I became pregnant, I had to have my new babies name start with a letter in the middle of the alphabet. So I told him we could only choose names from H-M. Maybe its a little OCD with me, who knows.
Reply:I know! I mean, just pick names you like! I can understand if you had a kid named Jack, and wanted to name your daughter Guadalupe, THEN you should think of a better name. But who the heck cares of Allison works with Victoria?

But what REALLY ticks me off is when people match the names by starting them with the same letter, or make it rhyme. Seriously, no one should name kids something like Larry and Terry...

My advice to them is just stick with names you love, but don't make one outshine the other. End of story!
Reply:I'm not one for names that rhyme, sound similar or have themes, but I do feel that siblings names should work with each other. I wouldn't use say Elizabeth for my daughter if I were going to use something modern like Zane for my son. I think the names should be of a similar era or at least sound nice together. This is of course just my opinion :)

Reply:I don't see the purpose of it really, but I guess it's that they just don't want one child called Larindnbffhj and the other Katie.
Reply:it flows better, probably.
Reply:I guess they feel it is cute.
Reply:I don't think so but others do. To each his own right.
