Can you start a 529 plan before you have children? Or must you put it in a living child's name?

I am 20 years old and don't plan on having children for probably 6 or 7 + more years. I've been reading up on them a bit but nothing specifically addresses this concern, but they seem to imply that it must be a living child. Any help would be appreciated.

Double check savingforcollege.com - good information on 529 plans in general.

I seem to recall you can set on up in your name and later transfer it to a child of your own.
Reply:Yes the child has to be born before you can get a 529 plan on him/her. The child must also have a social security number, which you should get at the hospital when the baby is born.

If you want to save for your future child's college education, you can open your own Roth IRA. While the IRA is for retirement, you can withdraw money from it to pay for education expenses, whether its you or your child.
Reply:"Wow.. No one knows about investing for their kids.. That's sad.. I pity the children born to those.."

sheez lady, nobody gives you an answer in 20 minutes and you assume no one is going to give you an answer. You want instant gratification. Wait a while, someone will answer your question
