Credit cards in minor children's names?

I know someone who has credit cards in his kids' names, and he uses them routinely. There are ethical issues, sure, but is this practice illegal?

Credit cards in minor children's names?
With a parent's consent for a minor under age 18, it is legal to obtain a credit card - a minor (under 18) by themself cannot enter into a legal contract alone. I do not think the card may be used by anyone other than the cardholder, even with permission (technically) but we all know people do it. Despite being in the child's name, the guardian/co-signer/parent would still be liable for the charges. The child's credit will be affected positively or negatively based on the payment patterns. Provided the parent makes all payments on time, the child will benefit in the long run; if the parent is negligent and irresponsible with the credit, the child's credit will be hurt, affecting their interest rates when buying a car or home in the future. Some parents do this to help establish a good credit pattern for their children, but some do it for selfish reasons and screw their children over; let's hope the person you know is doing it the right way.
Reply:not really there his kids he can do what ever if he wants to later on in life his kids will pay for an they would like him to much because of it credit is nothing to play with..........
Reply:If he uses his children's identity to obtain credit cards, it is illegal. It is called IDENTITY THEFT.
Reply:Sounds like he is a selfish wanker!

I'd report him to the FBI let them do the legwork...
Reply:Hopefully, when they get older the kids will get wise to this and sue him. I know I would dad or not. When they turn 18 there will be enough helping to ruin their credit and he shouldn't be one of those things. What a jerk.
