Why does Morocco have a list of children's names officially approved by the government?

I saw somebody online asking for the list so I got curious.....

Why does Morocco have a list of children's names officially approved by the government?
So the country won't have kids with names like Pilot Inspector or Moxie Crimefighter...
Reply:It's said to preserve "the Marocanity" of the names... well it does nothing but annoy parents. Especially when only common ARAB names, or words that are in an Arabic dictionary can be authorized. In short it aims to arabize the names in conformity with the abject pan arabism ideology, because Amazigh names, and you can't possibly find more Moroccan than that, are not in the list and therefore are not authorized and if that continues will disappear.

But anyway, that only seems to apply only to ordinary people, if you're rich, there is ALWAYS a way to make an exception for you.

That's an example of how much governments and administration can be stupid and stubborn in Morocco.
Reply:Wow, I didn't know such a list existed! I will have to ask Ai to find that for me. :-) Soo... if you chose a name that wasn't officially approved... then what?
Reply:It's only normal, because We Moroccans are a bit crazy, if it wasn't for this law half of the girls who were born in the 90's will be called either : Guadalupe or Thalia.

So i think it's good
Reply:A lot of countries do that. The Czech Republic in Europe, for example. It has to do with keeping children's names to within the 'norm' of that given country.
Reply:Its a common practise across many countries in the world. Certainly France have a list of approved names and whilst the UK doesn't I read an article in a paper recently that described how the Registry had refused some peoples request to call their children names that are basically text speak such as 4real!
Reply:Kinda sad, people should have the right to pick their own childrens names...I wonder if Esia's on there?

Maybe names should be approved, like If the name could cause emotional harm to the child or teasing...or maybe food ie. Candy, Peach etc, professions as names ie. Pilot, or misspellings of names should be banned.

....Are all the names religious? hmmm
Reply:I didn't know this list existed either so thanks for the information! Certainly I am a fan of the separation of church and state including less government interference in family or personal issues. People should be able to name their child whatever they want.
